Athlone Institute of Technology (also known as AIT) is a higher education institution in the Midlands of Ireland. The institution was established in 1970 as Athlone Regional Technical College.

AIT is the leader in the Institute of Technology sector in innovation, applied teaching and student welfare. AIT’s strength comes from identifying areas of skills shortage and working with businesses to improve links between enterprise and academia.

The Institute is home to 6,000 students undertaking a broad range of programmes in the domains of business, hospitality, engineering, informatics, science, health, social science and design. More than 11% of the full-time student population come from overseas with 63 nationalities represented, reflecting the globalised nature of its campus. The Institute’s global focus is also evident in the 230 partnerships and agreements it has signed with universities and research institutions around the world.

With a focus on real-world engagement, AIT’s approach to teaching and learning gives students the knowledge and skills sought by employers. This professional orientation is embedded across all faculties, through placements, project work and an applied research focus.

Academic programmes at AIT are available at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, while an increasing number of extramural options are also offered. Students may access degree programmes through a progression system of qualifications (known as the ‘ladder’) or through the traditional ab initio route. Such flexibility is a hallmark of the institute.

The institute’s appeal for students can be traced to the quality of courses offered, its highly accessible and centralised location, supports provided for students and its attractive modern campus. In addition to Irish students, 10 percent of the student population is drawn from Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East.

Assisting in the economic, social, cultural and environmental development of the region is also a strategic priority for AIT. The institute plays a major role in fostering and developing entrepreneurial activity in the Midlands Gateway/region. The Midlands Innovation and Research Centre (MIRC), located on campus, operates as a converging hub for innovation, research and enterprise. It provides incubation facilities for innovative and knowledge-based enterprises, an enterprise programme for entrepreneurs and start-ups, and makes available the resources and expertise of the institute to support client companies.
