Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is a state-funded third-level institution situated in the city of Waterford, Ireland. The Institute opened in 1970 as a Regional Technical College and adopted its present name on May 7, 1997.

WIT is the major provider of higher education in the South East region of Ireland and one of the largest IOT's in Ireland. It has six Schools and 16 Departments. The Institute has 4 campuses: Cork Road, College Street, West Campus (Carriganore), the Applied Technology Building and the Granary.

It is an autonomous Higher Education Institution operating within the Irish National Qualifications Network. The awards from WIT are recognised worldwide and graduates of the Institute occupy senior positions in major companies in Ireland, the EU and further afield.

The range of academic programmes is exceptionally extensive, ranging from Higher Certificate right through to post-doctoral research and covering the Humanities, Health and Nursing, Science and Informatics, Engineering and Architecture, Business and Education

There is a thriving research and postgraduate community in WIT. Many of the researchers have a high profile in both the national and EU community of academics.

It is committed to excel in all aspects of its activities which include educating the next generation leaders through their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes; producing highly creative and industry-ready graduates; developing internationally connected research and innovation eco-system; and evolving the unique model of stakeholder engagement which has had the real impact on their economy.

WIT has formal academic exchange and research partnerships with over 40 universities worldwide. These range from the old established Universities such as Oxford, Trinity College Dublin, and University College London to newer technological universities such as Budapest University of Technology and Nanjing University of Science and Technology.

In addition WIT has very close relationships with industry & commerce, the professions and the public service for research, consultancy, student and graduate placements etc. A culture of entrepreneurship and innovation is fostered at all levels in the organisation. This can be illustrated by one year enterprise platform programme offered to graduates by the School of Business.

Entry Requirements

  • You should be at least 17 years of age in January of the year of entry.
  • You must have a Secondary/High School Diploma, with good grades in English and Mathematics and at least 4 other subjects, on average + 60%.
  • Some courses have special entry requirements, which you should check under the course details.

WIT welcomes applications from candidates who have completed studies at higher level at another institutions and who wish to transfer onto a degree programme at WIT.

To qualify for consideration an advanced entry applicant must:

  • Satisfy the undergraduate requirements
  • Provide a certified copy of all academic transcripts with detail the subjects you studied and grades awarded

Taught Postgraduate

  • To enter a taught masters programme, you should have an honours degree in a related subject.

Research Postgraduate

To undertake a postgraduate programme by research, you should have the following:

  • A good honours degree
  • A pass degree, plus a graduate diploma or masters degree in a related subject.

The excellence of the accommodation for students is one of the reasons for WIT’s great popularity with International students.

There is a good supply of high quality student accommodation in Waterford City. This varies from private residential self-catering in houses or apartments to on-campus WIT student residences. Students are advised to reserve their accommodation as early as possible before their arrival in September to ensure that they secure a place.

WIT Campus Accommodation is like a home away from home. Purpose built and fully equipped, the environment is safe and pleasant; ideal for living and studying. Each group of three or four apartments shares a living room and a kitchen. All apartments are fully furnished and equipped, and crockery and cutlery are supplied.

  • College Fields, located on the Cork Road Campus, consists of 69 Single En-suite rooms of which 3 are suitable for disabled access. These apartments are located on the Main Campus with easy access to all WIT services and facilities.
  • Manor Village, two minutes walk from College Street Campus, consists of two four-storey apartment blocks comprising of 94 apartments with 365 bed spaces with many of its rooms especially designed for use by disabled students.    
  • Roncalli House, is situated directly adjacent to the Main Campus of WIT, consists of 7 single en-suite rooms 3 single rooms and two main bathrooms. Each bedroom is very spacious which allow students plenty of room for project work and living space.·

The WIT Campus accommodation team can assist you with making a choice but where you live is a personal decision.

Please be advised Manor Village or College Fields cannot accommodate students who wish to stay for only one semester/half a year i.e. September to December/January. However Roncalli House can accommodate one semester students. College fields is ideal for students who wish to be near the Main Campus, especially for those involved in out of hour's activities such as sports. Manor Village is located close to College street campus, but with a free bus service each morning and afternoon, getting to the Cork road campus couldn't be simpler. If you hope to work during your time at WIT, Manor Village is located close to the city centre.

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is committed to attract high calibre students from around the world.  To this end, it offers a wide-range of scholarships to students from a number of countries (NON EU, fee paying Students only), in line with  strategic international priorities.

Please be advised your eligibility for one of its scholarships will depend on your academic achievement (those indicated on your application for admission), not on your family need.  International students who may qualify for scholarships are still expected to demonstrate the ability to cover a significant percentage of the cost of their education.
